MetaTrader VPS vs Windows VPS: Which Fits Your EA?

You have an EA running on your computer. Now you want it to keep working when you close the laptop. The first decision is which hosting environment can run the complete setup, including any supporting software.

Which VPS fits your setup?

Use this helper before comparing providers. “Not sure” is a useful answer: a missing requirement is something to resolve with the software developer, not a reason to buy a larger server automatically.

MetaTrader VPS vs Windows VPS at a glance

Here, MetaTrader VPS means MetaQuotes' integrated Virtual Hosting service, also called MQL5 VPS. Windows VPS means a remote Windows machine with desktop access. ForexVPS.net is one company selling that second type; it hosts MetaTrader rather than replacing it.

The account and synchronization rules come from MetaQuotes' hosting terms. The Windows example follows ForexVPS' documented service. A host's “managed” label does not tell you exactly who handles terminal recovery or EA errors: ask what support includes.

Check your EA's dependencies

DLLs, scripts and supporting files

A DLL is a Windows library that a program can call for additional functions. MetaQuotes hosting prohibits DLL calls and stops a program that attempts one. Enabling “Allow DLL imports” locally does not override the hosting rule. An EX4/EX5 MQL library is a different thing; the rules allow relevant compiled MQL libraries to migrate. For MT5, scripts, custom symbols and non-standard timeframes are not transferred. An account requiring one-time-password authentication is also unsuitable for this autonomous service. Required files, licensing helpers and desktop copiers need individual checks; do not assume that a folder beside the EA will migrate with it. MT5 migration documentation.

Ask the developer about the exact EA version you own:

Does this version run on MetaQuotes Virtual Hosting? Does it require a DLL, a local data/configuration file, a persistent script, a custom symbol, a separate program or interactive authentication? What must I check in the remote logs after migration?

This is more useful than asking whether it “works on a VPS.” Both hosting types are sold under that label.

Web requests and indicators are not automatic exclusions

An EA using an HTTP service does not automatically require Windows hosting. MetaTrader migration supports WebRequest permissions and the allowed-URL list. Check how the particular EA connects and authenticates.

Indicator-only charts need special care: the MT4 and MT5 migration guides describe attaching an empty/template EA so the chart is included. That does not create a remote desktop for visually watching the indicator. See the MT4 migration guide and the MT5 reference above.

What happens after you sign up?

MetaTrader VPS: prepare, migrate, inspect

You prepare the intended charts, EAs and inputs in your desktop terminal, rent the virtual environment, then migrate the selected setup. There is no Windows password or desktop to operate. Use the terminal's VPS controls to request logs and inspect hosting status. Changes on your computer are not continuously mirrored: synchronize again when you intend to transfer a changed configuration. Virtual-platform management.

Migration can enable trading remotely even if local automated trading was disabled. MetaTrader disables local automated execution when transferring EAs to help prevent duplication. Do not treat the local switch as a remote stop button. Review the account and intended programs before synchronizing. MT4 migration behaviour.

Windows VPS: connect, install, configure

You normally receive a ready Windows environment and remote access details. For ForexVPS, distinguish three logins: the provider account manages billing; the server credentials open Windows; the broker credentials connect MetaTrader to the trading account.

From a Mac, the provider's documented route is Microsoft Windows App → Add PC, using the server address/port and credentials supplied for that server. You then work in its Windows desktop. You do not need to replace macOS with Windows. ForexVPS Mac connection guide.

Do not assume your broker's terminal and EA are preinstalled. The ForexVPS installation guide walks through installing MetaTrader. You still need the correct broker connection, licensed software, inputs and verification. These are documented steps; we have not completed this paid-server setup ourselves.

Compare the total hosting cost

Compare the same currency, billing period and number of accounts. The lowest advertised monthly equivalent may require paying for a year upfront.

How account count changes the comparison

Using the one-month rates above, three compatible accounts need three MetaTrader rentals: 3 × $15 = $45 per month. If one Core server can actually carry those three terminals, its displayed $32 promotional price—or $40 regular reference—would be lower for hosting alone.

That calculation does not establish that Core has enough capacity for your EAs. A heavy multi-symbol strategy can need more resources than several simple terminals. It also excludes administration time and any additional software licensing. With annual commitments, repeat the arithmetic using the annual totals; do not carry the monthly result across unchanged.

For a Windows quote, confirm the Windows licence, backup coverage, resource limits and restart assistance. A cheap server needing an upgrade may change the result. Three setups, three decisions

These are illustrative requirements, not tested customers or trading results.

One shared Windows server also creates a shared interruption point: a restart affects all terminals on that machine. Several rentals do not automatically prove infrastructure independence either. Ask about the actual arrangement if separation matters to you.

Verify operation before leaving it unattended

Buying hosting and seeing an EA name on a chart are not proof of continuing operation. On a demo setup, establish a small set of observable checks:

1. Identify the running copy. Record the account, server, EA version and inputs. Know which instance is meant to execute.
2. Inspect remote evidence. Confirm successful initialization and the expected account connection. MetaTrader VPS offers remote journals and CPU/memory monitoring through its management controls.
3. Separate disconnecting from stopping. On ForexVPS, disconnect Remote Desktop while leaving the application running; shutting down the server is different. Follow the provider's disconnect instructions. Reconnect and inspect activity from the interval you were away. Check any session-timeout policy with your host.
4. Check recovery on demo. A planned server restart is a separate test from closing the remote window. Verify that the intended terminal, account and EA recover without an unexpected second instance. Keep a record of what actually happened.
5. Check the broker route. Use the exact broker server, not just the broker's brand or your home location. Network ping is not an order-fill time or a profitability guarantee.

If the EA is online but not trading, work through our MT5 diagnostic before blaming the VPS. Hosting cannot create a trade signal that the strategy has not produced.

Choose a provider after the hosting type

For a compatible single-account environment, inspect MetaTrader VPS plans and restrictions. Choose a rental term after confirming fit.

Frequently asked questions

Which option is easier for a beginner?

For a confirmed compatible EA on one account, integrated MetaTrader hosting removes Windows administration from the workflow. A Windows VPS gives a familiar desktop but adds installation and recovery work. If your software needs that desktop, prioritize documented setup support over a claim of instant deployment.

Can I run several EAs on MetaTrader VPS?

Yes, one account does not mean one EA. The current paid-hosting rules allow up to 32 migrated EA charts; resource suitability remains a separate question. More trading accounts need more rentals. MetaQuotes rules, III.2 and III.6.

Is a trade copier a reason to choose Windows?

Check the actual copier. An application coordinating several local terminals is a different requirement from an EA using permitted web requests or a MetaTrader Signals subscription. Ask for explicit compatibility with the hosting type rather than assuming all copiers work alike.

Can I close my MacBook after setup?

You can stop using the Mac once the remote environment is running and verified. Closing a remote connection does not mean stopping the hosted application. A locally running EA, however, should not be relied on through system sleep. The Mac guide explains that distinction.

Does a VPS make an EA profitable?

No. Keeping software online is an operating requirement, not evidence that its rules have an edge. Evaluate the strategy and its trading results separately from hosting availability.
